Insane Kyle and TV’s Ian?

Devo Spice questioned,
“Kyle, are you Ian?” and
That became a song.

the FuMP rocks!!!

When I first heard about this song, before I’d even heard the explanation, I thought it was a good idea.  At first, I had a hard time telling the two of them apart vocally.  They sound similar, and so I thought it might be a play on that.  And, even though it’s not, they have been confused for each other on Facebook.  This combined with Devo being silly and testing to see if anyone even read his reminder mailings was enough for them to make a song about it.

They also paired up for FAWM as Scooter Picnic.

Brown Christmas

I’ve been singing the first half verse of this since I was a kid because, while we do get snow fairly regularly where I live, it’s not usually white on Christmas day.  The dead, brown grass, and any leaves that haven’t been collected litter the ground, as well as the dirt itself, all lend to the general perception of brown.  It’s been a long time, but I finally decided to complete that parody started so long ago.  So, here’s my attempt:

I’m dreaming of a brown Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the winds will whistle
And children bristle
To hear “there will be no snow”.

I’m dreaming of a brown Christmas
With every card I send around
Enjoy the leaves still on the ground
And may all
Your Christmases be brown.

Macaroni Feather

I’m sure that just about everybody has heard the song “Yankee Doodle” and are aware of the phrase, ”stuck a feather in his hat and called it macaroni”; but I doubt many know what it means.  I happened across this, and thought it would be fun to share.  Macaroni is an 18th-century British term that refers to rather extravagantly dressed men, and is derived from the fact that they developed a taste for macaroni, which wasn’t well known in Britain at the time.  The use of the term in the song indicates a belief that Yanks were so unsophisticated that they would belief a feather in their caps would be considered macaroni.

Jessie’s Girl (Different Perspective)

I doubt I’m the first to think of it, but the quick search I did din’t turn up an alternative; so, if it has been done, it’s not super popular on the search sites (at least where I looked). Some of the word choice probably isn’t grammatically correct, but I think it fits with the way the original song was written. In any case, someone at the FuMP could probably do it better, funnier; but I’m no Spaff, and I don’t do this very often. So, here’s my rewriting of “Jessie’s Girl” by Rick Springfield:

female friend

Jessie is a friend, yeah
I know he’s been a good friend of mine
But lately something’s changed that ain’t hard to define
Jessie’s got himself a girl but I wish that he was mine.

And I can’t look him in the eyes
And he don’t notice my body, you just know it
And we’ve only ever played games
Late, late at night. [*game SFX*]

You know, I wish that I was Jessie’s girl
I wish that I was Jessie’s girl
Why can’t I be a woman like that?

I play along with the charade
There doesn’t seem to be a way it can change
You know, I feel so lonely when they start talking cute
I wanna tell him that I love him but the point is probably moot.

‘Cause I don’t have real pretty eyes
And there’s not much shape to my body, don’t you know it
‘Cause all I ever do is eat
Late, late at night.

You know, I wish that I was Jessie’s girl
I wish that I was Jessie’s girl
Why can’t I be a woman like that?

Like Jessie’s girl
I wish that I was Jessie’s girl
Why can’t I be a woman
Why can’t I be a woman like that?

Now I’m lookin’ in the mirror all the time
I can see what he don’t see in me,
I’m not skinny; I’m not quick with the lines
Can’t say the way love’s supposed to be.

Tell me, why can’t I be a woman like that?

You know, I wish that I was Jessie’s girl
I wish that I was Jessie’s girl
I was Jessie’s girl.

Why can’t I be a woman like that
Like Jessie’s girl
I wish that I was Jessie’s girl
I was, I was Jessie’s girl.

The Color of Sound

I heard a story about Ida Maria on NPR.   She has synesthesia, and sees colors associated with words and sounds.  I’ve always kind of wondered if this would be distracting.  But, thinking about it a little, I think the worst part about it would probably be that other people wouldn’t perceive things the way you did, and so communicating with others could be rather difficult.  But, it sounds like she’s figured out how to deal with that, and knows how to perform with other musicians.

That Ian Is Insane

Recently, on the FuMP, there was a parody by Insane Ian.  He also made an entertaining video.  Now, I hadn’t seen the original until I clicked on the link he provided, but I liked it in its own right.  And I like how it ends better than the original*.

The first time I ran across Insane Ian, it was for his “You’re Pitiful” video of Weird Al‘s song (another instance in which I hadn’t seen the original video); both of which are funny.

The first time I ran across Insane Ian, he said ouch!

*it’s ***SPOILER ALERT*** borderline suicidal.

This comic reminded me of this song.  I don’t know that it’s fair to Robyn, but the imagery was just that strong and so perfectly suggests that song.

That’s Your Horoscope For Today

A friend reminded me of “Weird Al” Yankovic’s horoscope song, and I thought I’d write a little bit about it.  I thought about posting the whole lyrics, but decided to just post a link instead.  But I will quote one of my favorite parts:  ”Now you may find it inconceivable or at the very least a bit unlikely that the relative position of the planets and the stars could have a special deep significance or meaning that exclusively applies to only you, but let me give you my assurance that these forecasts and predictions are all based on solid, scientific, documented evidence, so you would have to be some kind of moron not to realize that every single one of the is absolutely true. / Where was I?”  Part of the reason I like it is how fast he sings it, but I also like the concept conveyed.

Mama Don’t Take My Kodachrome Away

The title is a line from a song that goes through my head every time someone says ‘Kodachrome‘; so, when my local news station* mentioned it, I thought I’d mention the song and show my (non-)age.  I’m not as old as knowing that reference would suggest; in fact, I wasn’t even born when it was written.  But I like to listen to all kinds of music, so I happen to know this song.  However, I have it on a 1991 concert album that has slightly different lyrics than I can find otherwise.  The lyrics  I know say “everything looks better in black and white”, whereas the original lyrics say they look worse.  The line always struck me as strange and backwards, so I wasn’t too surprised when I found out about the word change.
